Iran Sentences Prominent Reformist To Death

Hashem Aghajiri, a university professor and an ally of Iranian President Khatami, was sentenced to death for questioning the clergy's exclusive right to interpret Islam.
He was also sentenced to 74 lashes, 10 year ban from teaching and 8 year internal exile. In light of the death sentence, the exile and ban on teaching are not likely to be carried out.
Aghajari is the leader of Islamic Revolution Mujahedeen Organization, which supports President Khatami's reforms. The accusations and sentence reflect the power struggle between conservative clergy and reformists.
