Do you understand why Arthur Ashe was observed angry only once in public in a 20-year stretch of fame?

It was the night that someone told him how lucky Ashe was to be the best tennis player who ever lived. As the first person of color to break the white barrier of what was a rich, white man’s game,  Ashe had long demonstrated a quiet, almost self-deprecating demeanor of placid and calm. Hearing the reporter’s question, Arthur Ashe was visibly upset for the first and only known time in any public setting of his life.

He  looked at the reporter and asked, “Are you kidding me? As a child, I hit a tennis ball against the wall one thousand times every morning of my life and one thousand times every night of my life, rain or shine. Any day I wasn’t in school there were another thousand balls hit against the wall.”  Mr. Ashe then politely expressed his opinion that luck was unlikely to be the dominant factor in any type of human achievement.

Do you want those memories to be of half-baked efforts producing mediocre results, or do you prefer to look back at any given six months of your life and say, “Oh, yes! I worked my tail off and benefited greatly…   would you rather look back at trying your hardest at something?  Whatever you decide to do about the next sixty seconds.... well.....

what you are doing will speak so loudly...              you need not open your mouth.        We will both know who and what you are, a winner and a doer, or a blabbermouth who would serve us all best by serving silently?
